A beautifully refined copper-plate engraving presenting Ireland — Royaume d'Irlande — as seen through the eyes of one of the most esteemed French cartographers of the Enlightenment. Drafted by Didier Robert de Vaugondy, Géographe Ordinaire du Roi, this map was originally published as a centrepiece of the influential Atlas Universel of 1757, one of the most celebrated French atlases of the 18th century.
De Vaugondy's cartographic style is characterised by elegant simplicity, scholarly accuracy, and a refined aesthetic that reflects the intellectual ideals of the French Enlightenment. The map presents Ireland's four provinces, major towns, rivers, and coastal features with characteristic clarity, framed by a graceful cartouche and crisp original hand-colouring that has mellowed to a warm, honey-toned patina over 275 years.
